La Siciliana Ribelle

"Before fighting the Mafia you must first examine your own conscience, and then, after you have defeated the Mafia inside yourself, you can fight the Mafia that's in your circle of friends. We ourselves and our mistaken way of behaving are the Mafia."
-An excerpt from Rita Atria's diary

Earlier I watched "La Siciliana Ribelle" (The Sicilian Girl).  It's about a young woman who turns against her mafioso family and breaks the code of silence.  Even though it was slow at parts, I very much enjoyed it.  Although, I have to say, I am a sucker for true stories

Just a note... Even if you don't watch the movie, you should still look up Rita Atria.  What she did was truly remarkable and showed how strong she truly was.  I particularly this news article from 1992, the year it happened.

Eggplant Frittata

An Italian breakfast (eggplant frittata) with friends at Perry's Cafe in Old Town. Yummmm!

Club Dogo

Club Dogo introduced me to the Italian hip hop scene over a year ago, and they've always been my favourite since.  Also, here is Club Dogo - In Mezzo Al Banco.  If you click this link there will be an entire playlist of Club Dogo you can listen to.  Going to sleep for the night, sonno stanco.  Buona notte, mondo!

Marcello Mastroianni

I love this iconic photo from La Dolce Vita (1960) . . .

. . . of Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg

Tutto L'Amore Che Ho

Tutto L'Amore Che Ho
(All The Love I Have)

This was the first number one song in Italy in 2011.
It's by singer/rapper Jovanotti.

Lyrics
(from www.lyricstranslate.com)

Le meraviglie in questa parte di universo,
The wonders in this part of the universe,
Sembrano nate per incorniciarti il volto
Seem born to frame our faces
And if you'd gotten lost in the chaos,
Avrei avvertito un forte senso di irrisolto.
I'd have had a strong feeling of unresolved.
A great vacuum that would have gone further
Fino al confine estremo delle mie speranze
To the extreme limits of my hopes
Ti avrei cercato come un cavaliere pazzo
I would have looked for you like a mad knight
I wouldn've fought against evil and its instaces
I labirinti avrei percoso senza un filo
I wouldn've gone through the labryinths without hints,
Feeding on the ground that they would offer
E a ogni confine nuovo io avrei chiesto asilo
And each new frontier I would have asked for a roof
Avrei rischiato la mia vita in mare aperto
I'd have risked my life at sea
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezzo
Considering that love is priceless
I am willing to do anything to get a bit of it
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezzo
Considering that love is priceless
Io paghero' offrendo tutto l'amore
I will pay all the offered love,
Tutto l'amore che ho.
All the love I have.
Un prigioniero dentro al carcere infinito
A prisoner inside the infinite prison
Is you I'd feel if you were not in my heart,
I would be hidden like many behind a finger
A darla vita ai venditori di dolore
To give in to the sellers of pain
E ho visto cose riservate ai sognatori
And I''ve seen things reserved for dreamers
And I drank the juice of bitter contempt
And I committed all my purest acts.
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezo..
Considering that love is priceless...
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezo..
Considering that love is priceless...
I'm willing to do anything to get a bit of it
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezzo
Considering that love is priceless
Io paghero' offrendo tutto l'amore,
I will pay all the offered love,
Tutto l'amore che ho,
  All the love I have,
Tutto l'amore che ho.
  All the love I have.
Senza di te sarebbe stato tutto vano,
Without you I would be all in vain,
Like a sword that pierces a dead body,
Senza l'amore sarei solo un ciarlatano
Without love I woud be just a charlatan
Like a ship that never leaves port.
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezzo,
Considering that love is priceless,
I am willing to do anything to get a bit of it
Considerando che l'amore non ha prezzo
Considering that love is priceless
Lo paghero' offrendo tutto l'amore,
I will pay all the offered love,
Tutto l'amore che ho.. (x5)
All the love I have... (x5)

Restaurants in Italy

Al Ristorante
An elegant restaurant where Italians eat a full course meal.  Price and quality depend on the restaurant.

In Trattoria
This is a place for the whole family!  Filled with local dishes, here you usually have a main course and  dessert.  It's cheaper and less formal then un ristorante (a restaurant).

In Pizzeria
Everyone knows Italians are famous for their pizza!  In pizzerias Italians have their thin pizza cooked in a wood-burning stove, usually accompanied with a coke or beer.  Now, here in the states, there are big pizza chains.  In Italy, there's lots of pizzerias, all different.  Everything local, and Italians go either where the pizza's good or where they know the owner.

 Alla Tavola Calda
Like a cafeteria, this is for Italians on the go.  There are lots of foods already prepared and no need for waiters.  You just chose what you want to eat and pay the cashier.  It's common for Italians to eat here during their lunch hours, and you can find these diners by offices downtown.

In Paninoteca
Full of sandwiches, pizzas, and salads... students love to come here.  Usually near universities, the food is fast and cheap!  Students come in during quick breaks, as well as to study for hours or talk about classes with friends.
